Q&A - Questions & Answers
This is where you'll find the
answers to the most frequently asked questions that come our way. The
easiest and fastest way to find the answer to your questions is to look
here. It is categorized by subject, and each section has a link to get you
right back up here. If you don't find what you're looking for, simply

Questions About Us
- Who Founded Kid by Kid Children's Charities? - The
legal entity was actually founded by Andrea K. Finkelstein.
- Who is Rachel Finkelstein? - Rachel
Finkelstein is the (then) 9-year old who set the goal to raise money that started
the ball rolling to developing her charity. For more information about
Rachel, click here.
- Who is Andrea Finkelstein? - Andrea
Finkelstein is Rachel's mom. She loves her daughter so much and was so
ecstatic that Rachel wanted to help children in this way, that she took the
bull by the horns and set up this charity to help Rachel and all the
children like her reach their goals.
- What percent of monies raised goes to the
designated charity? We have filed with the
State of Arizona to use no more than 20% of all revenues toward operating
expenses (extremely low in comparison to most charities). BUT, we have
made the decision and commitment to give 100% - EVERY DOLLAR WE RAISE IN
2004 - to KWAC, the charity we are supporting.
- What will the remaining monies be spent on in
future years, when you may not give the full 100%, and you are allowed to
use 20% for operating costs? Like
anything else in life, there are always expenses. Some of those
expenses for Kid by Kid are website domains, website hosting, website
development, telephone and voice messaging, mail box rental, printing of
brochures and flyers (really expensive),
service mark registrations, pin design / jacket design and production,
accounting, legal filings, and all the other yucky behind the scenes stuff
that we don't want Rachel to have to think about either!
- How do we contact you? Please
see our Contact page
- If this is "Rachel's Charity, why isn't she
an incorporator? Why is Andrea Finkelstein the Incorporator
and Executive Director? Why isn't Rachel listed on any of the state
and federal filings? We tried to get
Rachel on there. Really we did. The catch? Like it is in
so many other areas of life, all incorporators, directors, presidents, and
so on must be of legal age (18 or over). So, while she is the main
"advisory board" at this time, Rachel is not legally able to be
any other part.
- Are the Donations made to Kid by Kid Children's
Charities Tax Deductible? Yes! We
always said previously that 'we should be,' but we decided to call the IRS
this December, 2004 (yes, this month!) and find out. I'm happy to
report that for 2004, while we do not yet have our official 501(c)(3) determination, because our
revenues are below the threshold amount required, and additionally, we have 27
months from our inception to complete our filing retroactive to our formation
date, we are tax deductible! [revised IRS statutes incorporated
10/2004]. Please see the official IRS
website for information about this, and please check our website beginning
January 1, 2005, for updates regarding our status.
Questions About Our
2004 Recipient
- Who is the recipient of the monies currently
being raised by Kid by Kid? Kids
With A Cause, Inc., a 501(c)(3) designated charity.
- Who is Kids With A Cause? - KWAC
is a charity made up of mostly celebrity children. Their Executive
Director is Linda Finnegan. For more information please click
here or see the KWAC site.
- What types of things does KWAC use their monies
for? Oh, my gosh! Too many things to
list here. But, to name a few, holiday gift drive for kids in group
homes, gift drive for kids in family shelters, blanket making and
distributing to homeless children and children in shelters, to name a very,
very few. They typically do about two to four events per month!
In addition, they support many fabulous charities, like Make-A-Wish, the
Leukemia Society, and so on. Please click on their link to find
out more.
- What percent of monies raised goes to the
designated charity? Kid by Kid is
structured by law to use no
more than 20% of all money raised for bonafied operating expenses.
BUT, we have made the commitment to give 100% of the money we raise to KWAC.
So, if we reach our goal of
raising $10,000, $10,000 will be given to Kids With A Cause, Inc.,
our designated recipient for 2004.
- How do I contact or find out more information
about Kids With A Cause, Inc? Just click
on this link!
- Who will be the 2005 recipient?
We're not sure yet and are continuously evaluating candidate children's
charities. To be eligible, they must be well-established, 501(c)(3)
recognized, and must give at least 75% of monies to those they assist.
If you would like to be considered, please contact us.
Questions About the Give
5-Ask 5SM Campaign
- How old do I have to be to participate in the
Give-AskSM
Campaign? If you are between the ages of 8 and 17 on December
31,
2004, and you are a U.S. Citizen residing in the U.S., you are eligible.
- How do I participate in the Give-Ask
Campaign? Participating is simple. You must obtain your
parents permission. Once you have this, simply print the Campaign
Packet by visiting our Forms page.
All instructions and forms are there!
- How do I get a packet if I don't have a computer,
a printer, or can't quite print the forms right from the kidbykid.org site?
We want everyone to participate and having access to the web or a printer
isn't required. The forms were placed online to keep costs down (more
money for the kids we're trying to help) and to make it fast and easy to get
everything you need in one place. But, if you or someone you know
needs a packet sent to them, just let us know, we'll be happy to send one
out right away!
- I received a packet in June, why is the
campaign longer? Why are the forms different? What happened to
gathering 10 permission slips? If you received a packet in
November or were given information about the campaign from someone who was
given a November packet, you received the 'prelaunch' version. In
November 2003, we spoke with about 100 kids at a Kadima Youth Group Retreat. The
program was not officially launched and attendees were told to please take
it home and show their parents. We were looking for feedback with
regard to what we had come up with to make sure kids and parents felt
comfortable and the process was easy enough. Some of the feedback made
it obvious that gathering ten permission slips from friends would be too
difficult and time consuming. In addition, the campaign time was
extended from ending March 31, 2004, to its new ending time of December 31,
2004, to give more time for children to become involved. This was also
due to lead times for news and publicity articles. Next,
our Grand Prize was changed from a $500 gift certificate to the combination
of a phone call from Hilary Duff and a day of participation at a Kids With A
Cause event due the the graciousness of the Duff family and Linda Finnegan,
the Kids With A Cause Director. Finally, in September 2004, we changed
the program once more by deleting the extra step of telling ten friends and
reducing the number of adults donation requests from 20 to 5. This was
done because, while we received donations from several children, as of
September 21, 2004, no-one submitted a complete eligible packet. And,
we were told by all who we spoke to that the fundraiser was too hard with so
many steps and so many pages to worry about. To allow for these expected and unexpected changes, our
Official Rules always stated that they were subject to change.
- I told 10 friends about the campaign and and
no-one wanted to participate, do I have to tell ten friends?
As of September 20, 2004, while we hope you will tell some of your friends
about what you are doing, telling friends is no longer required and you are
no longer required to fill out a log. We are finding that most kids
tell their friends about what they are doing anyway. And, we no longer
wished to burden you with this step of logging it and sending back this
extra page of paper.
- I asked 5 adults and no-one wanted to
make a donation. Can I still be eligible to win the Grand Prize?
Can I still get a Kid by Kid lapel pin? As of September 20,
2004, to meet drawing
eligibility, you need only give $5 of your own, "ask 5
adults" for donations and record them on the Official Donation Record,
and remit all donations and required paperwork. Although we hope many
people will be as enthusiastic and warm-hearted
as you, none of those you ask for donations need to give. You need only
log them in accordance with the Official Rules
and follow all other instructions stated in those rules to be eligible for
the pin or Grand Prize award. But, to reach our goal with an estimated
334 participants, each person will need to raise an average of $30 ($5 of
their own and $25 from the five adults). We hope you will wish to set
your personal goal equal to or greater than this $30 level. But,
again, this is up to you and is not mandatory.
- I sent in the old packet but I had never told all
ten friends and didn't return that portion (or) I only asked 7 adults for
donations. Am I now eligible for the grand prize, even though I wasn't
before? Absolutely! If we received a 'old style' packet
from you, either prior to September 20, 2004, or at any time during the
campaign, and what you submitted would not have been eligible before because
you didn't complete some parts, but what you submitted before meets our new
eligibility guidelines, you will still now be entered in the drawing, even
though you weren't entered at the time we received it.
- I'm still confused and have a few
questions. What do I do now? We're glad you've asked! Just visit our Contact Page and
drop us an e-mail. We'll get right back to you!
