The NC Legislature authorized a pilot program for online charter schools in 2014 and NCCA opened in 2015 as North Carolina Connections Academy. Starting in the 2019 - 2020 school year, NCCA chose to operate with more local control and oversight and changed the name to North Carolina Cyber Academy.


Over the years, NCCA has built a tight-knit school community that offers quality education to create a well-rounded student experience for those who need or desire alternatives to traditional brick and mortar institutions.


The school is open to all North Carolina students from kindergarten to 12th grade. In 2021, NCCA hosted its largest graduation to-date, bestowing diplomas on 286 seniors.
